Duncan is a cancer surgeon and full-time faculty member of The Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine.  Dr. Duncan specializes in gastrointestinal surgical oncology including surgery of the esophagus, stomach, pancreas, colon and rectum, and retroperitoneal sarcoma. He holds joint appointments as an Associate Professor in the Departments of Surgery and Oncology. Dr. Duncan is the Chief of Surgical Oncology at the Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center; he is the Chairman of the Cancer Committee and directs the weekly Tumor Board there.  Dr. Duncan has ongoing research and publications on gastric and esophageal cancer, and was funded by an NIH grant to study gastroesophageal tumorigenesis. He received the Richard Starr Ross Clinician Scientist Award from the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine for his research on gastroesophageal tumors. He has given many national presentations on cancer surgery and research, and has given international talks on cancer surgery in Europe and the Middle East. He has received the Golden Apple teaching award in the School of Medicine, and has been recognized for excellence in resident education. He is on the selection committee for residents applying for surgery training at Johns Hopkins.
