The classical motor symptoms of Parkinson’s disease have been extensively researched, and effective clinical tools for their assessment and treatment have been developed and are readily available. In contrast, researchers have only recently begun to focus on the non-motor symptoms (NMS) of Parkinson’s disease, which are often poorly recognized. The non-motor symptoms of Parkinson’s disease have a negative impact on patient quality of life, morbidity, and mortality. While some NMS can be improved with currently available treatments, others can be more refractory and require research into novel (non-dopaminergic) drug therapies for the future.
Edited by key international experts in the field of non-motor symptoms of Parkinson’s disease and with contributions from leading specialists, this book summarizes the current understanding of NMS in Parkinson’s disease and points the way towards future research. The book focuses on the NMS complex in a unified manner, bringing together all the diverse symptoms of the NMS complex in PD in one book. Individual chapters concentrate on the available evidence in relation to the pathophysiology, clinical presentation, and treatment of NMS. The book serves as an invaluable reference for movement disorder specialists, neurologists, geriatricians, trainees, nurse specialists, other healthcare professionals who care for people with Parkinson’s, and their caregivers.
